After graduating from Fresno State in '69, I went to San Diego, mainly because I wanted to live close to the beach. I managed to take 4 years earning a 1-year MA there and then moved to Oregon, where I taught junior college and worked on my Ph.D. at UO (Go Ducks!). After a few fill-in jobs (like back-country jeep driving in Utah) I joined the University of Pittsburgh faculty in 1983 and have been here ever since. I've written a few dull books that none of you should bother trying to read but have really enjoyed a career focused on young people and scholarship. I met my wife Lisa here in Pennsylvania and we've been fortunate to travel widely in Europe and Latin America. We don't have children, but do enjoy a hoard of godchildren, nieces and nephews.
